What to Expect When Caring for Someone With Dementia

For most caregivers, the number-one barrier to taking a holiday by using respite care — in which someone watches over the person with dementia for an extended period, including overnights — is findingsuch a gift. One way to ease the transition is to hire in-home caregiving help during the day, when you’re there.

In-home care agencies can provide workers who perform services ranging from shopping and companionship to personal care. Many caregivers develop a relationship with one or a few aides and then hire those individuals for longer stays (overnight, weekend) as they grow more comfortable with the idea. Remember that even busy presidents with the world on their shoulders manage to take vacations!
